Tool Breakdown is an independent, data-driven software comparison site built for freelancers, solopreneurs, and small teams. Every tool we cover is signed up for, used for real tasks, and scored against criteria that match a specific use case — then we publish the raw data so you can verify the verdict yourself.
Choosing software is exhausting. Every vendor claims to be "the best," and most review sites dodge the question with a vague "it depends." We built this site to answer one question clearly: which tool should you pick, and why?
We focus on the tools that power modern small businesses — productivity suites, project management, password managers, VPNs, design tools, and the software stacks that run a one-person company.
Tool Breakdown is reader-supported through affiliate commissions and ads. That model only works if the recommendations are trustworthy, so we hold ourselves to a hard rule: no vendor can pay for a placement, a score, or a ranking. Rankings are decided by the data first; affiliate relationships are disclosed on every page. Our full methodology is published on the How We Test page, and our Affiliate Disclosure explains exactly how commissions work.
Tool Breakdown is written and maintained by Xiaosong Wen, who tests every tool that appears on the site. Found an error or a tool we should cover next? Contact us — we read every message.
